Air-source heat pumps in Málaga: questions before deciding
Energy use, emitters, space and maintenance: questions to help assess an air-source heat pump installation.
Will it suit every home?
An air-source heat pump needs to be assessed as a complete installation. In an existing home, insulation, demand, available emitters and space for equipment—and a hot-water cylinder where applicable—all matter. In a new build, these requirements can be coordinated during design.
A technology having several applications does not mean that every unit provides all of them. Heating, cooling and domestic hot water must be specified in the brief and component selection.
Does it use electricity, and what about cold weather?
A heat pump needs electricity. Performance depends on outdoor conditions and the temperature the installation is asked to deliver, as well as design and use. Compare manufacturer data under conditions relevant to the project and the declared seasonal performance.
Cold-weather operation should be checked against expected demand, equipment capacity and any specified backup. It is not enough to assume identical performance in every situation.
Can existing radiators stay?
Possibly, but this needs checking. Review radiator output at the proposed temperatures, the water distribution and each room’s demand. Underfloor heating is not a universal requirement: it is one option to assess alongside other compatible emitters.
Split systems can also use reversible heat-pump technology. Comparing an air-source heat pump against an assumed cooling-only split can therefore give a misleading result.
What will it cost, and what maintenance is needed?
The quotation should describe the actual solution, including controls, adaptations and commissioning. A payback estimate needs usage and price assumptions; a generic table cannot guarantee it. Any grants being considered need checking against the relevant current programme.
