Efficient air conditioning: choosing a system and planning installation
What to compare between split, multi-split and ducted systems, and how to plan location, drainage and maintenance.
Distinguish layout from technology
Split, multi-split and ducted systems describe arrangements of units and air distribution. A heat pump describes a technology that can provide heating and, when reversible, cooling. These are not opposing categories: a split unit can operate as a heat pump.
First define which rooms need conditioning and when they are used. Then assess which arrangement suits the home, planned building work and required controls.
Assess capacity and placement
Floor area is one input but does not describe the whole demand. Orientation, the building envelope, occupancy and internal gains also need consideration. Equipment capacity and unit selection belong in the installation assessment.
Before installation, plan unit supports and positions, pipe routes, electrical supply, condensate drainage and maintenance access. Noise conditions and any permissions relevant to the work also need review.
Compare equivalent proposals
Review included functions, manufacturer data and the scope of installation and commissioning. A proposal should make adaptations and other trades’ work clear. A larger unit or better rating alone cannot resolve a poorly planned installation.
Compare estimated energy use under matching usage and operating assumptions. A generic savings percentage cannot reliably be transferred to every home.
Operation and maintenance after installation
Follow manufacturer instructions for user-accessible components and use appropriately qualified personnel for technical work where required. A loss of performance needs diagnosis; regular refrigerant recharging should not be presented as a universal requirement.
