Two systems to plan together
Plumbing supplies water to points of use, while drainage carries it away. Although their functions differ, they are linked when planning bathrooms, kitchens and plant spaces. A layout that looks simple on a plan may require checks of routes, levels and structural interfaces.
The Spanish Building Code’s DB HS addresses water supply in HS 4 and drainage in HS 5. Applicability needs checking for the building and work involved; the project or technical assessment defines the solution.
What to review on the supply side
Assess expected demand, hot- and cold-water distribution, materials and equipment connections. Isolation valves and components requiring inspection should be identifiable and accessible.
For an existing system, age can inform the inspection but does not establish every pipe’s material or condition. Before proposing full replacement, explain what has actually been checked and the assessment’s limits.
What to review on the drainage side
Fixture positions need coordination with drainage routes, gradients, system ventilation and appropriate access points. Moving a bathroom or kitchen requires assessing these conditions before finalising the layout.
Odours, noises or repeated blockages need diagnosis. One symptom can have several causes and does not justify promising a particular repair before inspection.
Coordinate the work and keep a record
Record the areas involved, included reinstatement work, testing and handover documentation. Where several professionals participate, identify who performs each task and how service interruptions will be coordinated.
