Installation checks

What to check before closing ceilings, floors and wall linings

Before covering an installation, agree what must be checked and documented. Closing up is a coordination milestone.

Define the review point before reaching it

Closing a suspended ceiling or wall lining changes access to the installations. Schedule the prior review in the construction sequence and make it known to the teams carrying out the affected work. Do not leave that requirement to be discovered when the finishing team is already ready to start.

Identify the areas to be reviewed, the people who need to participate and the required documents. The depth of the check depends on the installation and the project; a general checklist helps coordinate it but does not replace the judgement of the responsible professionals.

Compare the work with the current approved solution

Check that routes, equipment and connections match the drawings and approved changes. If there is a difference, record it and decide how it will be addressed before concealing it. Taking a photograph is not the same as validating a technical modification.

Review the areas where trades meet: ducts and luminaires, pipes and access panels, or service penetrations through construction elements. Coordination must consider supports, insulation and access as well as whether each component physically fits.

A practical checklist for the pre-closure meeting

Use this list to organise questions and record the outcome for each area:

  • Does the work match the current documents, and have differences been resolved?
  • Have the tests required before covering been completed and recorded?
  • Are any connections, insulation, supports or finishing details outstanding?
  • Do penetrations and junctions retain the specified construction solution?
  • Do access panels allow the planned maintenance operations?
  • Has the work that will be concealed been identified and documented?
  • Is it clear who confirms that closing up can proceed and with which outstanding items, if any?

Check tests and construction junctions

Each system needs the relevant checks before it is concealed. Confirm with the responsible parties which tests have been completed and where the results are held. Do not assume a test is valid simply because someone remembers it happening; the record should be traceable to the area or circuit.

Service penetrations and junctions with enclosing elements also need review. Their details can affect resistance to water, sound transmission or other project performance requirements. Materials and procedures are technically specified; the meeting should verify that the specification has been followed.

Document the work with references that remain useful

Take overview photographs and relevant details, with a clear way to locate each image. Link them to the drawing and room. If a dimension or reference will be needed for a future intervention, add the verified information to the agreed documentation.

Avoid relying only on a continuous video or images held on personal phones. A simple structure by floor, area and date makes the information retrievable later. The aim is for someone who was not present during construction to understand it.

Separate completed areas from outstanding issues

If the review finds tasks still to resolve, identify their location and who is responsible. The project and site leads will decide what can continue and what must wait. Do not extend acceptance of one area to others that have not been reviewed.

At Red Málaga, we coordinate our installations with the builder and technical team around these milestones. Before closing up, a specific list of checks and outstanding tasks helps organise progress. At handover, the review records become part of the useful information about what was actually built.

Give each reviewed area a reference and link observations, images and tests to it. When an outstanding item is resolved, record its change of status and the date. This simple method distinguishes a checked area from a visually similar one that still needs review, particularly when several teams are progressing in parallel.

More common questions

Do photographs replace installation tests?

No. They help locate and document concealed elements, but do not establish performance or watertightness on their own. Each check must be carried out and recorded in accordance with the relevant technical definition.
